The film Vivarium 2019 is a vivid example of an interesting idea that would be better adapted into a short film. But unfortunately, short films are not as popular as full-length ones. And when the creator of a film (in this case, director Lorcan Finnegan), in pursuit of fame, wants to make a feature film without having enough ideas, he begins to artificially stretch the plot. And the result is something that is impossible to watch.
The plot in "Vivarium" is quite classic, like for a horror movie. A young couple, Tom and Gemma, stumble upon an advertisement for the sale of new houses somewhere outside the city. And although the sales agent speaks and behaves extremely strangely (like any normal person would run away from just looking at this frame), the main characters agree to stop by the mysterious area and look at the house. After arriving (as unexpectedly), the agent disappears somewhere, and the main characters cannot leave the area - they keep winding circles along the same streets. I have to spend the night in the cabin. Soon, someone puts a box with a baby inside and the inscription "grow up a child and you will be free" in front of the main characters...
"Vivarum" is interesting to watch only for the first half hour. There's tension here, and the feeling that the main characters are trapped, and there's no one to expect salvation from. But then boredom begins with uninteresting dialogues and flabby text. The viewer will be fed some crumbs of information about what is happening, but there will be no answer to the question of who built the area and for what purpose and created all these surreal conditions in which the main characters found themselves. At the beginning of the film, Finnegan draws some parallels of his plot with cuckoos and their desire to lay eggs in the nest of other birds. But it's not clear what this parallel is about. Here, the "cuckoo" has invited "other birds" into its nest and does not let them out, and the "other birds" understand what kind of ass they are in.
If this is a philosophical work and we don't need to take everything literally, then what is the film philosophizing about? Is being a parent bad? That you shouldn't agree to go somewhere with strange real estate agents? In short, it's unclear again. What about the actors? The main roles were played by quite famous actors - Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots. And even if they tried, there was a feeling that the actors were more likely to leave the room before some next film project. And this is a serious problem, because the film is a chamber film, with all the attention focused on the main characters. Jonathan Aris did a much better job as an eccentric real estate agent and actors unknown to the general public who got used to the role of a fast-growing boy.
There are no complaints about the visual side. The beautiful scenery of the streets with identical houses and the sky with exaggerated artificial clouds at the beginning create a feeling of something abnormal and dangerous. In general, the film "Vivarium" came out just like that. The film is boring, it has neither an interesting plot nor a well-presented idea. Those who dare to watch this movie may get a headache while watching it, and after watching it (if, of course, they manage to survive to the end) they will ask the question: what is the point of all this? And nothing. What's the point of a 10-minute children's horror movie at night, which for some reason was stretched to 1.5 hours?
